One
Walk with them on
About 10% more energy burned on the same route — and in the research, people didn't rate the walk as any harder.
Two
Three circuits a week
Twelve to twenty repetitions, taken close to failure. That is the condition under which light weights build real strength.
Three
Sunday off
Recovery is when muscle adapts. Most programs skip it. Yours is built around it.
The evidence
You don't need heavy.
The belief that muscle needs heavy weight is out of date. What the research actually shows:
A meta-analysis of twenty-one studies found gains in muscle size were similar between light loads and heavy loads.
One condition makes the difference. Every one of those studies took the set to the point of momentary failure — where another repetition isn't possible.
Researchers note this matters most for people who cannot tolerate the mechanical stress of heavy lifting. Older adults with joint discomfort are the example they give.
"Which is why the number on the band matters far less than the last three repetitions."
The band
Two pounds. Or two kilograms.
